Introduction

The National Universities Commission (NUC), as a regulatory agency for University Education in Nigeria, has as parts of its mandate, the definition and maintenance of academic standards. The Commission has in the past organized the development of Minimum Academic Standards and subsequently, accreditation for all approved undergraduate programmes offered in Nigerian Universities. For postgraduate programmes, NUC has concluded the process of developing benchmarks and minimum academic standards as a follow up to the success recorded in the undergraduate programmes. These Benchmarks and Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) for postgraduate programmes in Agricultural Sciences are to facilitate accreditation of the programmes in Nigerian Universities. The benchmarks describe the minimum requirements each University is to attain. Individual Universities may modify them provided they do not go below the minimum benchmarks.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the postgraduate programmes in agricultural and related disciplines is to develop highly skilled manpower for the agricultural and other sectors of the economy. The programmes will equally produce competent scientists and researchers for Universities and Research Centers as well as make the public and private sectors able to compete globally and to act as change agents within the Nigerian economy.

Aims and Objectives

The postgraduate programmes in Agriculture are aimed at:
  • Producing persons with advanced knowledge and skills in agricultural science and related disciplines;
  • Exposing professionals in related disciplines to knowledge, skills and practices of modern agriculture;
  • Providing training in specific aspects of agricultural sciences;
  • Providing advanced professional training for graduate employees of industry, the public service or in self-employment
  • Equipping students with research skills through the conduct of supervised research, seminar presentations, project and thesis preparation;
  • Providing training for those whose future careers lie in teaching and research at the tertiary level and in research and development in the public and private sectors.

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) In Soil Science and Ecological Management/Crop Science and Forestry Management

Philosophy

The philosophy of the postgraduate diploma programme in soil science and ecological management/crop science and forestry management is to provide postgraduate training in these (fields) for Higher National Diploma Graduate of Agriculture, professionals wishing to convert to agriculture and recent graduates of Agriculture who otherwise would not qualify for admission into the Masters Degree Programmes in these fields.

The Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Soil Science and Ecological Management/Crop Science and Forestry Management is aimed at:

  • Production persons with advanced knowledge and skills in this field.
  • Exposing professional in related fields to knowledge, skills and practiced of the above disciplines
  • Animal Science & Production
  • Provide training in specific aspects of these disciplines

Candidates Seeking admission for postgraduate Diploma in Soil Science and Ecological Management/Crop Science and Forestry Management must have any of the following qualifications from recognized institutions:

  • Higher National Diploma in Agriculture with minimum of lower credit.
  • Minimum of pass Degree at bachelor's level in Agriculture plus a minimum of five years cognate experience.
  • Minimum of pass in Higher National Diploma plus ten (10) years cognate experience.

Duration of Postgraduate Diploma Programmes

  • The full time Postgraduate Diploma Programme shall run for a minimum duration of two (2) semesters and a maximum of four (4) semesters.
  • The part-time Postgraduate Diploma programme shall run for a minimum duration of four(4) semesters and maximum of six(6) semesters.

Animal Science and Fisheries Managment

Introduction

There is established for the profession of Animal Science an institute known as the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) by the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Act No 26 of 2007). NIAS is the regulatory body for Animal Science practice and has powers to regulate all issues pertaining to Animal husbandry practice and standard of training. In fulfillment of this mandate therefore, only candidates that are registerable with the Institute can be admitted for post-graduated training in Animal Science.

PostGraduate Diploma (PGD) in Animal Science

This programme is design to serves as a remedial course for holders of a B. Agriculture (Animal Science ) with a FCGPA of less than 2.40.

The Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Animal Science is aimed at:

  • Producing persons with advanced knowledge and skills in basic and applied animal science.
  • Providing training in specific aspects of animal production/animal science.

Admission Requirements

The criteria for admission into the PGD programme will be as follows:

  • Matriculation requirement of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, including Mathematics and English Language.
  • A 3rd class degree in Animal Production/Animal Science, or a Pass degree with minimum of 5 years cognate experience. Mode and Duration of Study

Mode and Duration of Study

  • The Full-time Postgraduate Diploma Programme shall run for a minimum duration of two (2) semesters and maximum of four (4) semesters.
  • The Part-time Postgraduate Diploma Programme shall run for a minimum duration of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters

Candidates seeking admission for Postgraduate Diploma in Food Science and Technology must have any of the following qualifications from recognized institutions:

  • Higher National Diploma in Agriculture with a minimum of upper credit.
  • Minimum of pass Degree at Bachelor's level with five (5) years cognate experience.
  • Minimum of pass in Higher National Diploma plus ten (10) years cognate experience.
